As Valenzuela City rallies to eliminate illegal drugs in the City by declaring all barangays a drug-free workplace and thirty (30) barangays now drug-cleared, it is currently tapping the transportation sector to participate in its anti-drugs campaign.
The Valenzuela City Hall Site Tricycle Operators and Drivers’ Association (VCHS-TODA) was declared as the first drug-free TODA in Valenzuela City this October 11, 2019, empowering cooperation among transportation groups to join forces with the local government’s fight against illegal drugs.
In line with Dangerous Drugs Board’s advocacy to initiate a primary drug prevention activity in public transport groups, the City Government of Valenzuela laid a foundation on the city-level to enact projects and programs involving the transportation sector in ensuring the safety and well-being of drivers and commuters.
Through the Valenzuela City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (VADAC), “Project Pogi: Pogi ako dahil Drug-Free Ako!” leads the influence among drivers to represent the industry as not only for public transport but also for public peace, order and safety. The campaign aims to create trust between commuters and drivers and guarantee commuter safety, proving that the City’s public transport personnel are not into illegal drug activities.
Mr. Jaime Molina, VCHS-TODA President, relayed his message to other Valenzuela City TODAs and hopes to be “an inspiration so other TODAs can take action on having drug tests” and to “show support to the national government in its anti-drugs campaign.”
Mayor REX Gatchalian thanked VCHS-TODA for their initiative and also challenges the group to maintain its drug-free status, “Madaling magpa-drug-free, pero maintaining the status na drug-free, iyon 'yung mas mahirap. Ang hamon natin sa pamunuan ng VCHS ay panatilihin na drug-free ang inyong TODA para maging example kayo. Gusto namin na maipakita sa inyo na na-appreciate ng lokal na pamahalaan ‘yung inyong inisyatibo na maging drug-free ang inyong TODA (It is easy to be [declared] drug-free, but maintaining the drug-free status is difficult. Our challenge to the officers of the VCHS-TODA is for them to maintain their drug-free status so they will be an example. We want to show that the local government appreciates your TODA’s initiative).”
Apart from the recognition as the “First Drug-Free TODA”, VCHS-TODA also received incentives and prizes from the City Government.
Also present in the declaration were officers and representatives from different Valenzuela City barangays and TODAs, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Valenzuela City Anti-Drug Abuse Office (VADAO) and City Councilors.
